Day 4 - Taroko Gorge

Distance - 55km.

Elevation Gain 720m.

Estimated Riding Time - 3-5hrs

Today we will experience Taroko Gorge, which is one of, if not, the most incredible sights that you can experience on the island and one of the true natural wonders of Taiwan. It's a 19km long canyon  that has been formed by erosion, typhoons and earthquakes over millions of years, leaving huge marble gorges, bright blue rivers and and patches of pristine forest.

We'll ride through, taking our time to stop and enjoy the splendour of the cliffs that are thousands of feet high, and in places extremely narrow. A great way to spin the legs and get ready for the longer rides to come.

Estimated Riding Time - 5-6hrs

Start the day by picking your way through the lowland fields up to Ruisui, before returning to the beautiful road 193 until Yuli, where you’ll turn east to the only challenging part of the day, which is a 3km climb up to the pass. Savour the wonderful hilly scenery before heading through a tunnel that brings you out in the East Coast National Scenic Area. Feast your eyes on the wonderful elevated view of the coast, before sweeping down a fantastic descent to the coast road. Take a right and head south towards your accommodation in Chenggong, past the iconic Sanxiantai bridge.

Estimated Riding Time - 4-5hrs

Enjoy the beginning of the day rolling southwards, down the coast, before turning inland for the longest of all the passages across to the Rift Valley. The climb is long, but with a shallow gradient and the scenery is just sublime. Pass through tiny indigenous villages and marvel in the Jurassic Park like terrain, before you drop down into the valley around Fuli. From here, it’s a fairly flat ride through the rice fields and on to Chishang.
